American Cancer Society Campaign “Choose YOU”

This week I was invited to write for the American Cancer Society’s Campaign Choose YOU.

Choose You is a movement created by the American Cancer Society that encourages women to put their own health first in the fight against cancer. The movement challenges women to make healthier choices, and supports them in their commitment to eat right, get active, quit smoking and get regular health checks.

The Choose You Movement shines a light on a hidden issue: that while one in three American women will get cancer in her lifetime, about 50% of cancer deaths could be prevented if more emphasis were placed on early detection and healthier lifestyles including maintaining a healthy weight through diet and exercise and avoiding tobacco.

In the constant struggle between family, work and self, we know how difficult it is to focus on oneself. To help change this, American Cancer Society has developed the Choose You Commitment. Powered by stickK, this online program provides tools and support to enable women to commit to and achieve their personal health and wellness goals. Research shows that individuals who receive support in making positive choices are up to 5 times more likely to maintain healthy habits. The Choose You Commitment provides this support.

Life Brings Us Signposts: A Moment’s Peace Inspiration #28

Life brings signposts.

If we choose to notice and acknowledge these serendipitous occurrences—it taps us into a whole new kind of tracking device, a tool to keep life on course. The development of events beyond my control can feel like magic. One day the famous rock group, the Beatles song “Let it Be” plays on my car radio, then in the grocery store, and again in an office building’s elevator—it’s too coincidental to ignore. It feels magical. I listen to the message.

Take a Shower: Moment’s Peace Inspiration #12

#12 Moment’s Peace Inspiration: Take a Shower
This morning I took a shower. However, I wasn’t really in the shower. My thoughts were already in the future, driving Sam to school, pondering what I would make for dinner, and then organizing my day’s work schedule.

Like many of us, I was nowhere near being present with the task at hand. By noticing my wandering thoughts and bringing my attention back to the shower, I began to feel the cleansing water’s soothing sensation on my skin, allowing the warmth of the water to relax my stiff muscles. I became aware of the moist air, smelled the fresh mint scent of my shampoo as I massaged my scalp, and took in the aroma of my citrus sage body soap washing away the staleness of the previous day. This awareness became heightened and beautiful when I brought my attention back to the present moment.

After my shower —when I’d truly stayed in the shower—I stepped out clean, refreshed, relaxed, and ready to greet the day.

Healthy Mother Healthy Child: Creating Whole Families From the Inside Out

It’s another routine weekday. Everyone up early, scrambling with the morning ritual of getting children to school and adults to work, all on time. Shoulders are heavy with stress from job deadlines, homework, chaotic after-school activities, and the spin cycle of getting up and doing it all again tomorrow.

Simultaneously attempting to plan a quick dinner menu and pack healthy lunches it seems everybody has some kind of complaint: a runny nose, a dull headache,“I can’t focus at school,” or didn’t sleep well. As a mother, it can seem nearly impossible to create health and happiness, not only for yourself but for your whole family.

But even though I still have mornings like the one above, I am here to tell you that once you discover health and happiness begins from the inside out, it really is possible to feel good for no reason, everyday. And, it begins through creating a place of capacity, emotional and physical “shock absorbers” to help you and your children withstand everyday challenges through a routine of preventive care. In the end Benjamin Franklin got it right, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
For the last fifteen years, the focus of my work has been helping others create a healthy balance in their day-to-day life. And yes, I personally struggle with the same stress, pressure, and not having enough time in the day to squeeze it all in as you do. But I know all too well that the wear and tear of our demanding lifestyles takes its toll on all of us, parents and kids.

Our bodies can put up with it only for so long until our stress manifests as a physical or emotional problem, be it the common cold, a headache, insomnia, or a bad mood. Lucky for us, by focusing on prevention—building up our emotional and physical reserves—we can avoid many of those problems entirely, creating families that are wholly happy and healthy in the process.

A Moment’s Peace: A Mom’s Guide to Creating Calm Amidst Chaos

Your turn for carpool. Dinner unmade. Orthodontist appointment started fifteen minutes ago. Cell phone vibrating. Conference call scheduled. Txt from husband: co dwnsizing again.whos nxt? How can one more minute, one more worry, be squeezed into your day?

If your life is anything like mine—and what mom’s isn’t?—at least some part of the scenario above rings some bells for you. What would you do for a moment’s peace? Lock yourself in the bathroom? Leverage your house? Sell your soul? Anything? If you’re an average mom, you need a moment’s peace more than anyone else, and if you’re an average mom, you probably feel like a simple moment of peace is also entirely beyond your reach. Let’s face it, as wonderful as it is, motherhood can sometimes feel like a continual series of interruptions, your every thought and task fragmented as your attention is continually pulled in different directions.
