Truewellbeing Inc is a B Corporation!

truewellbeing logoIt is official. Truewellbeing is now a B corporation! Truewellbeing Inc is the company I started some 12 years ago. And, it’s grown up. At its core, Truewellbeing Inc is a company that focuses on the education and empowerment of women and on families’ whole health and well-being.

Why a B Corp?

Initially I wanted to form a non-profit. Then I learned about b-corporations and I realized it was a perfect fit for me– as I need to make money to be able to sustain giving back money!  Through triple bottom line transparency, a b-corporation becomes a way to differentiate our business from other’s who may be “talking the talk” about being sustainable. A B corp allows us to grow with values and a mission behind us–a movement for a new way of doing business.

The Change We Seek

Truewellbeing’s mission is to improve the lives and well-being of women and families from all walks of life. Educating women through all forms of print and electronic media, educational workshops and classes, Truewellbeing also produces locally sourced and hand-crafted products. Truewellbeing is committed to a triple bottom line (profit, people, and planet) and continues to grow as a company, give back to others in need, and nourish a foundation of integrative health for families for generations to come. Photography is a Beautiful Thing!

Photo by Tracey Clark (Tracey and me)

Learning how to take a better photograph is something I put on my 2011 “ways to tap into my creativity” list! So when I had the opportunity to meet Tracey Clark last week, I was nothing less than thrilled! She is a seasoned and savvy photographer who I had the privileged of spending a beautiful day with.

She joined my workshop at Cal-a-Vie Health Spa and then we chatted away at lunch, had a meditative walk in the labrynith, and experienced the moment,  The Magic of Togetherness. We ended the afternoon snuggled into the comfort of an over-sized sofa with a refreshing mug of mint tea before it was time to hug good-bye. A wonderful day that truly felt like a blink in time. Unplugged at Cal-a-Vie

Now that I wear a professional hat as a writer and teacher (unlike my  earlier years of running around taking care of patients as a staff nurse)– a good portion of my day is spent sitting typing away at my computer. Yes, l love what I do. But, I don’t necessarily love the toll my work has taken on my physical shape!

No oxygen in my lungs

I dedicate a diligent hour to my practice each morning. It consists of gentle yoga, breath work and meditation, and most evenings I walk with my husband after dinner (on the flat residential streets of Houston). So when I woke up at 6am my first morning at Cal-a-Vie Health Spa to join the 3.5 mile hike through the beautiful California hills, I quickly earned the spot of dead last in the group! Having to stay silent (not because I was in a meditative state, but due to the lack of oxygen I was able to squeeze through my tightened lungs). [Read more...]

Want To Lose 10lbs?

Losing weight is not an easy thing!
Honestly, I think most women would like to lose at least a couple of pounds. Peggy’s story is a real life example of the power within. Losing her 20lbs and maybe more importantly maintaining that for 3 years is a testimony to her  commitment and dedication. And, her story is a beautiful reflection of the natural balance our body craves.

Equilibrium is what our body wants
Ultimately our body is striving for equilibrium– whether that’s in body weight, a calm and peaceful outlook, or the natural rhythm of sleep and wake. Finding homeostasis is what our body organically knows how to do– when we allow it. Peggy shares her story about how she used the power of a guided relaxation to kick start balance for her.

Peggy’s story
I began meditating with Beth back in Dec. 2007. I did it consistently for the first time. After 6 months I had lost 20 pounds slowly. Now after 3 years I have continued to meditate and keep the 20 pounds off. Yes I love Beth and her loving & soothing ways. And will be grateful forever for her. I have the gift of pea…ce and ease; I so recommend Beth’s meditations. Love Ya All, Peggy [Read more...]

MD Anderson & Integrative Wellness

Finding a Quiet Still Space at MD Anderson’s Integrative Medicine Center
Last week I presented a workshop for the faculty and staff at MD Anderson’s Integrative Medicine Place of Wellness. It was one of those workshops that even though I knew my content (like the back of my hand)– I was a little nervous as I glanced around the room. It was a good-sized room filled up with really intelligent people, and all who were experts in my subject matter!

Famous yogi Vanda Scaravelli

Before I had much time to ponder being nervous, I was up in front of the group talking about my connection with Lorenzo Cohen, the head of the Integrative Medicine Department. Lorenzo and I serendipitously met through a mutual friend when I moved to Houston about 8 years ago. When we were introduced, neither one of us realized we had a common denominator. Then through conversation it came to light that we shared a similar feeling about a famous yogi– one of my most inspirational yoga teachers, Vanda Scaravelli. Vanda Scaravelli happens to be Lorenzo’s grandmother! Vanda was the inspiration for my beginning stages of studying yoga while I lived in London. She wrote the brilliant book Awakening the Spine, which still stays near my bedside table. [Read more...]

Just Do It!

Taking Care of YOU

When a women changes her life for the better, everyone around her benefits. Women are the grounding force that affects everyone around them. I believe the wellbeing of the family and of our society itself depends upon women becoming healthy.

I know the saying, “If mama isn’t happy, nobody’s happy” rings true in my home. Taking good care of ourself is ultimately one of the most powerful acts we can do for anyone else. The repercussions of taking care of ourselves, allows us to care for our families, for others and our connection to the world for generations to come. Just do it!

the blog: a place to just “b”

Initially the inspiration of “b in the moment” came from a fun way for me to bring my own awareness back to the here and now. My nickname being Beth, I used my initial “b”, as the mantra “b in the moment” –to bring my awareness back to the present.

I decided to call me blog “binthemoment” as a blog that awakens the senses! My hope is that you will find this blog a place to connect with the moment you are in right now; whether that’s visually inspiring through images, listening to a guided relaxation podcast or reading an inspirational quote or blog post–a place to just “b” in the moment and reconnect in a way that soothes and heals you.

Discover Yoga As a Powerful Tool

Gentle yoga stretches, breathing and meditation are three powerful tools that make up my daily morning practice of yoga– a practice that brings balance to my body and re-connects me to my soul everyday.

Just like brushing my teeth
Those tools have become as essential and regular for me as brushing my teeth or washing my face every morning. My practice gives me a way to tap into a place that allows my body to self-heal and re-connect to me and my divine essence and I have more capacity to deal with whatever life deals me. After fifteen years of dedicating an hour of my day to my practice, there are still mornings I  have to convince myself to begin! However, once I light my incense as a ritual of my intention to create this sacred space and allow my body to stretch, I am almost instantly transported into a new and better place.

You can feel this way too
If you dedicate the time to practice every day you too will begin to see a real difference, increased energy, a sense of calm, and more joy. Yoga is not an exercise that asks you to wear special clothes, hang out with an incense-burning crowd, or become vegetarian. It can begin as simply as taking some time to explore the idea of focusing your attention in a new way. You can wear your p.j.’s, relax in a quiet space and count your breaths, or try out some gentle stretches with focused awareness in a pair of jeans, or sit and quietly meditate on your bus ride home.

How I came to yoga
I began with a weekly Wednesday morning gentle breath-based yoga class in a local activity center—on Wednesdays I felt fantastic, and so I kept going. What I am suggesting is you decide what might work for you—what you can do to ensure that you will begin to care for your body and soul. And if that means a morning walk while focusing on each step in connection with your breath, or any of the  numerous ways reconnecting with you happens– just do it.

Crave the good feeling
What I can say, is that once you get a taste for the good feelings of caring for YOU can bring–be prepared to continue, as your body and mind will crave the repercussions of balance–ultimately healthier, happier and more at ease in this new and better place. Nothing beats a certified, enthusiastic, compassionate teacher to guide you on your path. I frequently remind others the best way to find a class that fits is—to make it convenient, and resonate with your teacher. If you aren’t too sure about the session, keep looking—the good news is you can sign up for a yoga class almost anywhere: a local gym or YMCA, a studio, or a church hall. Set your intention and dedicate your energy to making it happen. You’ll be so glad that you did.
